Monday Music

I thought a nice way to start off Mondays would be to post a song, preferably one with some relevant lyrics or that has historical significance in itself.

And what better way to begin than with The Kinks! This is "Victoria" the title track from their 1969 record Arthur or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire. As you might guess the album has some historical content. "Victoria" in specific is Ray Davies' ode to the late nineteenth century glory days of the British Empire. Though, as with many Kinks' songs, the lyrics are overflowing with sarcasm and it's pretty hard to see it as anything other than an attack on the pretensions and arrogance of the British Empire. Which is why I'm dedicating "Victoria" to Doug Feith, Max Boot, and all of their friends who spend their time daydreaming about being T.E. Lawrence.
